49TH Parallel Coffee Roasters
Vancouver, British Columbia
This North American coffee roaster renowned for its in-house doughnut purveyor Lucky’s, has created two distinctive café experiences that capture the brand’s vibrant spirit.
Once a run-down laundromat, the Main Street location has been revitalized into a trendy Vancouver icon. Inspired by early 20th-century Brooklyn industrial warehouses, the space now features an open patio and comfortable seating. Simple yet bold bespoke wall sconces and large-scale pendant lighting create a sense of awe above the long service counter, while a striking wood ceiling “box” with wire mesh cleverly conceals overhead ducting. The project earned first place in the North West Design Awards and the IDIBC Shine Awards in the Food & Beverage category.
The newest location in the Fortis BC Building lobby in downtown Vancouver presented a unique challenge: integrating a commercial kitchen into a space not zoned for food service. HDI designed a fully self-contained structure, a “building within a building” to satisfy health, safety, and fire regulations. This technical solution became the creative driver, resulting in a sculptural “gift-wrapped box” clad in bold striped Carrera marble and white oak that elegantly conceals the kitchen and mechanical systems. Clean black-framed glass display cases highlight Lucky’s gourmet doughnuts, while black metal accents, rich marbles, warm oak tones, and leather benches deliver a warm, sophisticated café environment.
